My Story
In my early 20’s I was told that I would be in pain for the rest of my life after having an MRI on my lower back. I was devastated and felt my life was falling apart. Every movement was restricted, I could no longer dance, or run or get out of bed freely.
Then one day I read a book ‘healing back pain’ by Dr John E Sarno. This was the beginning of my journey that got me pain free. All I needed was to understand how my brain works, and realise what was actually causing my pain was not a structural problem but neural pathways that had got stuck in a fear response. Over the next few months my pain drastically reduced and now I live my life as I did before my back pain started. I run, dance, play and get out of bed anyway I want!
I continue to work on my own nervous system undoing years of learned fear responses. As I do so the protection around my heart softens and I am beginning to live life from a place of love.
It is my commitment to love that keeps this journey alive for me. My wish is to offer some of the amazing tools and practices that I have learned along the way so others too can experience the amazing healing capacity of our nervous systems.
What is a neural circuit/plastic condition?
Did you know that all pain is actually created in our brain?When we suffer from chronic conditions the pain signals firing in our brain have become overactive, firing when there is no actual danger.
If I were to burn my finger on a hot stove the nerve endings in my finger send signals to my brain, my brain then makes a decision to turn pain ON or OFF depending on its perceptions of the situation. In most cases it chooses to turn pain ON. This is a good thing, it's how we are able to keep ourselves safe and out of danger. It's a bit like a fire alarm, signalling danger to us to keep us safe.
However sometimes this danger alarm gets over activated firing when there’s no danger present, we call this neural circuit pain or neural plastic pain.
Symptoms can present as pain but also brain fog, anxiety, depression and other neurological conditions.
What causes our brain to send unnecessary pain signals?
Childhood trauma, traumatic events, chronic stress, injury, and unexpressed/ repressed emotion all play a key role in neural circuit pain.
Chronic stress is a condition affecting thousands of people. It's so common that it's becoming a baseline for “normal”. Research is showing that stress from our childhood, accidents, and unexpressed feelings are playing a huge role in the chronic pain/symptom conditions we experience. By working with these stresses we are able to rewire the brain and reverse chronic pain/symptoms.
What to expect from a session
In our sessions we look at some of the most up to date neuroscience and gain an understanding of how pain works. We then work with Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) to change the neural pathways of the brain. Turning down the danger/alarm signals and increasing a sense of ease and safety. We also work with the nervous system using a variety of tools specifically designed to help regulate the fear response.
These processes and tools work for people who have minor conditions but also work for those who have long-standing conditions and years of illness.
Sometimes it is necessary to work on the underlying emotions and we do this with Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy (EAET). EAET is a therapy that is used on people who have chronic pain conditions. It is a psychological therapy that works with stress and trauma. Often this stress and trauma is from early stages in a person’s life (but not always). It is gentle and yet can be profoundly powerful, showing to have significant benefits on people who are overcoming their symptoms.
How many session required is completely individual. Sometimes all that’s needed is 4 sessions. The the path to recovery can however take time and commitment but with the simple practices and with the dedication to your own healing it is more than possible to live a thriving life.
By coming to see me I ask you to have a willingness to meet what is coming up, and an openness to explore what is challenging. I’m not here to ‘fix’ you, but I can offer a safe space and life changing tools that help you to work with your symptoms and nervous system. The success of this approach depends on your willingness and participation. Each person is different and each healing journey has its own time line.
This work is not necessarily easy, but it can be life changing.
