Pain Reprocessing Therapy
What is Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT)?
Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is a mind-body approach that helps people overcome chronic pain by retraining the brain and calming the nervous system to interpret pain differently.
Chronic pain often starts with a physical injury or condition. But for many people, the pain continues even after the body has healed. This happens because the nervous system becomes overactive and stuck in a state of high alert, causing the brain to continue sending pain signals unnecessarily.
PRT works by helping you rewire your brain’s response to pain and teaching your nervous system how to return to a calmer, more regulated state, reducing and even eliminating those unnecessary pain signals.
How Does It Work?
Imagine your brain and nervous system are like a home security system. After an injury, the alarm (pain) goes off to protect you. But sometimes, that alarm gets stuck in the “on” position, even when the danger has passed.
Chronic pain happens when the brain and nervous system stay stuck in protection mode, keeping you in a loop of tension, fear, and pain. PRT helps you turn off the alarm by calming your nervous system and retraining your brain to feel safe again.
In guided sessions, you’ll learn how to:
Recognise when your brain and nervous system are sending false pain signals.
Feel safe in your body again.
Shift your focus from fear and avoidance to confidence and relief.
Use nervous system regulation techniques to calm your body and mind.
Why do I work with the Nervous System?
When the nervous system is dysregulated—meaning it’s stuck in a heightened state of fight, flight, or freeze—it can amplify pain signals and make your body feel like it’s under constant threat.
PRT teaches you how to regulate your nervous system by:
Recognising triggers that keeps your body in survival mode.
Practicing tools like breathwork, visualisation, and mindfulness to bring your nervous system back to a state of safety and calm.
Building trust in your body again, so you stop bracing for pain and start feeling at ease.
Exploring pleasure as a tool to regulate your nervouse system
What to Expect from a Session
PRT sessions help you reduce chronic pain by calming your nervous system and rewiring your brain’s response to pain.
1. Calming the Nervous System
The sessions often includes breathing, body scans, or grounding exercises to bring your nervous system out of "fight-or-flight" mode. When your body feels safe, pain signals start to quiet down.
2. Exploring Your Pain Differently
You'll learn to recognise false pain signals and approach pain with curiosity instead of fear. By reinterpreting these signals as harmless, you teach your brain to stop sending unnecessary pain messages.
3. Nervous System Regulation Tools
I will guide you through tools like:
Deep breathing to calm your body.
Mindfulness to reduce pain-related tension.
Visualisation to build positive, pain-free associations.
4. Addressing Emotional Triggers
You'll identify any emotions or stressors that may worsen your pain and learn how to process them in a safe way, reducing your body's pain response.
5. Reintroducing Safe Movement
You’ll gently practice visualising and performing movements that you may have been avoiding due to fear of pain. This builds confidence and helps rewire your brain to stop expecting pain.
6. Daily Practice
You’ll leave with simple, daily exercises to continue calming your nervous system and retraining your brain at home.
By consistently practicing these steps, your brain learns to turn off unnecessary pain signals, leading to long-term relief.
How Many PRT Sessions Will I Need?
Most people experience noticeable improvements in 8 to 12 sessions, with lasting relief often achieved in about 12 to 16 sessions.
The number of sessions can vary depending on your pain history, emotional triggers, and how quickly your brain adapts to new patterns. While some people see results quickly, others may need more time and consistent practice to fully rewire their brain’s response to pain.
I tailor each session to your needs and provide you with tools and exercises to use between sessions for ongoing progress. Many clients find that weekly sessions, combined with daily home practice, lead to the best long-term results.
This process is not always easy, but it can be transformative.
I look forward to journeying with you!
